"At Silverado Senior Living our vision is to give life to those others have given up on."

September 17, 2001

To the Entire Staff of Silverado,

I am writing to thank you all for the incredible job you did in the caretaking of my mother, Perky G. Please know that I am speaking for my whole family who flew in during her last few days to say goodbye and witnessed the touching care you expressed for our mother as well as for each of us.

I remember the first time I came to see Silverado, after my mother’s living at three different care centers in the last three years, needing to find a more skilled facility and thinking: Am I at the zoo? All sizes of dogs wandering loose, all sizes of birds in and out of cages, cats, rabbits. all sizes of people walking around and sitting in the lobby chairs, residents in the staff offices, and caregivers in the halls calling each person by name. I couldn’t imagine anyone being able to remember all the names, never mind where each person should be at any given moment. I have to admit, even as a broad-minded social worker, I was skeptical.

After being around for six months and experiencing my mother’s death, I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your philosophy of treating each individual as respected human beings with specific needs and finding the strategy that might work best. I think the most valuable part for me was when I was sitting in my mother’s room reading, watching her breathe and listening to the people in the hall talking to each other. Caregivers offering hugs to someone scared, calling a resident by name and playing into their search for someone, gentle coaxing when a resident resisted a request, use of the animals or a snack to offer comfort and never being anything but patient and respectful. I was continually amazed at the genuine care felt towards each other with caregivers not even assigned to my mother’s area of the building that day coming to share a few tears and stories together. When we were tired, my family and I were grateful for food and drinks being wheeled into the room at all hours of the day, caregivers just making sure we were comfortable.

Please know we are very thankful and feel very humble at your doing a job none of us could have done alone. Our mother was well taken care of and I wish I had found your community sooner. I have let everyone I can think of know of how Alzheimer’s and dementia can be something lived with because you and Silverado Senior Living exist.

Sincerely yours,
Merritt S., LCSW
